The Learjet 31 is a high-altitude and fast-light jet derived from components of the Learjet 35, its powerplants and fuselage, and the wings of the “Longhorn” variants. The aircraft typically cruises above 43,000 feet but is capable of reaching altitudes greater than 50,000. It can reach 41,000 feet at maximum gross weight in less than 30 minutes. With the beefier engines, cruise speeds in excess of Mach 0.80 are attainable. Typical seating includes room for eight passengers and two crew members through a three-seat divan and five captain’s chairs. It is a bit lacking in amenities, however. The galley was removed from this version and it has little space in the cabin and baggage area. Later versions of the aircraft boasted improvements with a larger cabin design and thrust reversers added.
Other features have been added or become available over the years. Some are available as certificated aftermarket modifications. These include additional stowage space, aerodynamic modifications to improve low-speed handling characteristics, and greater fuel capacity to increase range. The airplane is the gem of its class and outpaces other light jets in all areas of performance, from cruise speed to climb, and boasts superior avionics. What it lacks in capacity, it more than makes up for in operations. It is efficient, economical, and fast.
